By So Brick, Eh?
Another year around the sun. Well, sort of. 365 and a quarter. That’s not right either. 365.24. That’s why in years divisible by 400 we skip the leap year. That’s right, even the leap year correction needs corrected. The imprecision of time measurement is a reminder that all this is made up, enjoy the ride, stick it to the man, power to the people.
My musical tastes this year. Hmm.
Bo Burnham’s soundtrack for his Netflix special Inside seems even more prescient than it did upon release. I recorded something like 40 videos this year for my job. Between takes, all I could hear was “but look I made you some content, daddy made you your favorite so open wide, here comes some content.”
If you’re looking to support an Oregon DJ, a good comrade started spinning beats under the name Digital Marmoset. “Mūccu (Breathe)” is my favorite track so far. His work is still a bit underdeveloped, but he’s securing sets in the local scene. It’s early and drug-hazy sounding. If I still took bong rips, I’d probably like it even more.
Another pal, Nicky Sparkles, released a new single. “Move,” this year. I’m still partial to the previous single “Yo,” but damn he’s got a voice. Ethereal, piercing, jubilant, these words come to mind.
Wyoming punk rock band Stay Awhile released their first LP this year, appropriately titled Longer. Not quite as raw as the EP, more melodic, more emotional. Is there such a thing as “Mountain West Emo?” If Midwest Emo is a thing (which I loathe to consider, fuck Ohio), then other regions surely deserve the same opportunity.
A notch up in notoriety, Bite Me Bambi really stood out at a festival I attended. Their best track (so far) is a cover of Offspring’s “Want You Bad,” but their original “Video Games” is also a good listen. Makes me wonder what Gwen Stefani could have been if she stayed the course.
Pour one out for our fallen comrades, Collinsworth has hung up the hat. Marriage, bills, the usual story for fledging punk bands. I got to attend what may very well be the last performance, of sorts, at the wedding of one of the bandmates where they drunkenly sang along to their own song.
